The 7 Best Breakfast Foods

They say breakfast is the best meal of the day, and I would tend to agree. Eating breakfast will leave you feeling energized, awake, and alive. You’ll be ready to tackle the challenges of the day more readily. A great day almost always starts with a great breakfast. So what’s the best breakfast foods?

  • Cold Cereal - Cheap and easy to make, cereal is preferred by a vast number of people. You’ve got to love a food that takes 15 seconds to prepare and fills you up for half a day. A lot of cereals are heart healthy and will do your body well in the long run. I’m a big fan of Honey Nut Toasted O’s, which is a generic cereal that you can buy at your local grocery store. It comes in a bag, lasts a long time, tastes great, and is good for you. What more could you ask for?
  • Instant Oatmeal - Can you go wrong with oatmeal? I don’t think so, especially if you pick up the maple and brown sugar variety. Instant oatmeal is similar to cereal because it is cheap, easy to make, and filling. However, unlike cold cereal, you’ll be grateful on a cold winter day for the warm feeling hot oatmeal gives you.
  • French Toast - If you’re looking for a decadent breakfast, you need look no further. French toast is the ultimate in sweet and delicious breakfast food. By dipping bread into egg (often with cinammon, sugar, and milk) and pan frying it, you’ll be transforming the simple grainy taste into a flavor extravaganza. French toast is often served with maple (or other) syrup, and this just adds to the magnificence and decadence. Try it out: I’m sure you’ll love it.
  • Pancakes - Whether they’re made from scratch or from a box, everyone loves a great pancake. With so many different serving options, it’s awfully hard to go wrong. Want to cover your pancake in fruit? Sounds good. How about dousing them in syrup? Tasty, right? If you’ve got a really bad sweet tooth, you can even try chocolate chips, whip cream, and a cherry. Delicious if you can handle all the sweets.
  • Waffles - Eggos are perfect for the person on the go. Stick them in the toaster for 30 seconds then grab and run. You’re given a great dose of vitamins, nutrients, and taste all at once. Easy and relatively quick, waffles are a great way to go if you’re pressed for time but want some hot food for the road. I recommend blueberry waffles and generic toaster cooked waffles are usually more healthy than the brand name ones.
  • Hashbrowns - Hashbrowns for breakfast? Just hashbrowns? Yeah, you can do that… if you get them loaded. Put onions, salsa, cheese, and all kinds of other great stuff in your hashbrowns and you’ll be full before half your plate is finished. Hashbrowns make a great meal if you have the time to prepare them or wait for them at a restaurant. Be warned, though, you’ll be extremely full.
  • Eggs, Bacon, and Toast - Can you beat eggs as a breakfast food? I honestly don’t think so. There are so many ways to prepare them that you can try endless varieties. I prefer my eggs over medium, but you may like yours scrambled, poached, or sunny side up. It’s all a matter of personal taste. Throw the bacon (or ham or sausage) in there and you’ve got a ton of protein to energize you throughout the morning. The toast (ideally with jam) will give you some carbs that’ll make you feel great and
peppy all day long. If you’re not having eggs at least every once in a while, then you need to grab some right away.

That’s it for the 7 best breakfast foods. Did I miss anything? Let me know if I did, as I’m curious to see if you eat something other than what I offered up.

You can make pancakes ahead of time, freeze them and then pop them in the toaster like Eggos. Super cheap and easy (and more healthful).

Protein shake — its thick texture will help keep you satiated longer and the ability to make them any way you like should really make for a nutritious and delicious breakfast.

How about trying a toasted peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Lots of protein, sweet and yummy and you can eat it on the run. Take a napkin along.

Great, lots of comments here! Let me address them one by one.

Anna: Great suggestion, and something I’ll have to try out in the coming weeks. I love pancakes, and would love to try this out. Thanks!

Mark: I love yogurt. I prefer Yoplait Lite (I buy 8 packs to save money). Blueberry is the best!

J: Protein shakes are great for a morning meal. I find the hardest part is getting them to taste good. My protein shakes are usually part protein powder (double chocolate), low-fat yogurt, a banana, and skim milk. Super tasty!

Phyllis: I’ve never had toasted PB&J, so I’ll have to try that out. Do you toast it after it’s already made?
