3 Essentials of Gym Etiquette

Whenever I go the gym, I pay special attention to make sure I am following the simple rules of gym etiquette. You may not realize it, but these rules do exist just as they would in any other group situation. There are, however, a few things that you absolutely should do in the gym to make sure you fit in. The three essential rules of gym etiquette are:

  • Don’t Stare - I cannot count the number of times I see people stare at others in the gym. Honestly, it amazes me as it is such a faux pas in modern society. There are a variety of reasons people stare. Whether you’re gawking because they bodybuilder is so muscle bound, the woman is so attractive in spandex, the middle age guy needs to lose his beer belly, or something completely different, just know that you shouldn’t do it. It’s rude and inconsiderate and if you get caught people will think you’re creepy.
  • Don’t Hog the Weights - If you’re going to take 3-5 minute rest periods between sets, get off the bench and let someone else get in on the action. It’s not going to break your concentration or hamper your work out in any way. Similarly, if you’re sitting on a weight machine chatting to your friend and you see someone standing there, get up and move. It’s just plain nice to let others use the equipment that they’re paying for too.
  • Wipe Everything Down - If you are sweating (which you should be), then you need to wipe down the machines, benches, and equipment that you’re using. Most gyms will provide towels and disinfectant in a central area for you to use. No one wants to be exposed to your testosterone laden excretions. I don’t want to smell you when I lay down to bench press. Wiping the equipment down also prevents the spread of communicable diseases. So, if you used something, clean it up.

Following these simple rules of gym etiquette will make your experience, and that of those around you, much more pleasant.
